Start with the nights. Agree the details together.
Choose a pattern, the date it begins, and which parent starts. Select “Compare another pattern” to see two options on those same dates. Look across the whole two-week cycle before comparing a longer range. Changing the starting weekday shifts where the pattern falls; check the dates in the preview.
The counts are overnights, not hours of care. A change after school and a change after dinner can have the same overnight count. Write down pickup times, locations, and holiday exceptions separately.
Use this as a planning aid. It does not determine legal custody or calculate child support.
Look more closely at a pattern
A familiar schedule name can hide practical differences. These guides walk through the sequence and the handoffs to discuss.
- 2-2-3 Shorter stays, with weekdays swapping each week.
- 5-2-2-5 Fixed weekdays and alternating weekends.
- 3-4-4-3 Three-night and four-night stays across two weeks.
- Alternating weeks Seven nights in each home.
- Every other weekend A two-night stay with the second parent every two weeks.
Compare equal-night schedules or work through eight questions for choosing a schedule.
A few useful details
Can I compare two custody schedules?
Yes. Choose “Compare another pattern” below the calendar heading, then select the second pattern. Both use the same dates and starting parent. Compare the overnight totals, consecutive nights and day-by-day assignments. Print both options together, or download a separate calendar file for each.
Is the planner free?
Yes. You can choose a pattern, change the dates, count the overnights, print the result, and download a calendar file without an account or email address.
Does 50/50 mean equal time in every month?
An equal-night pattern gives each parent seven nights over a complete fourteen-day cycle. A month can begin or end partway through that cycle, so its totals may differ. The planner counts the actual nights in the date range you choose.
Does the calendar include pickup times or holidays?
This planner shows the repeating overnight pattern. It does not set pickup times or add holiday exceptions. Agree those details separately and check them against the arrangement your family follows.
Can I use the result in my calendar?
Download the .ics file and import it into a calendar that supports iCalendar files. It contains all-day markers such as “Night with Mom.” It is a one-time copy: later changes here do not update an imported calendar, and the markers do not specify pickup times.
Can I save a PDF?
Choose Print, then use your browser’s Save as PDF option. Review the print preview before saving or sharing it.
Does this create a schedule in CoFam?
No. This is a separate planning tool. Keep the pattern, starting date, and starting parent in your notes; those choices would need to be entered separately in CoFam. The result is not sent to an app account.
